NATIVE CHALLENGE LAURELVIEW (September)

Blue sky, bright sunshine and a gentle, autumnal breeze provided perfect weather for the Native Challenge held at Laurelview Equestrian Centre on behalf of the Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd and the Northern Ireland Connemara Breeders Association.
But this was a Native Challenge with a difference. Besides classes for Pure and Part Bred Irish Draughts and Connemaras there was an open class for all other horses and ponies, ensuring something for everyone.
The classes in question, Showjumping, Cross Country, Dressage and Ridden Show, were hotly contested by good humoured riders on well behaved mounts that were turned out to perfection .
The main sponser was Bluegrass Horse Feeds, represented on the day by Craig Kileff and Rachel McGuigan. Responding to questions about the suitability of Bluegrass for Ireland's native breeds, whether pure or part bred. They pointed out that because native breeds are generally easy to do they respond very well to Stamm 30, a balancer that provides all that horses and ponies need by way of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, protein etc. And because relatively small amounts of Stamm 30 is needed it represents great value for money in these tough, economic times.
Standing alongside Bluegrass as sponsers of individual classes were Wilsons Auctions, Abbey Pest Control, Landscape Services Newtownards, Mac Promotions Sport Super Car and The Landscape Centre, Donegore. Further awards were provided by the Northern Ireland Connemara Breeders Association, Laurelview, Old Mill Saddlery and Browns Of Ballinderry.
Speaking on behalf of the Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd, its chairman Tom McGuigan spoke warmly of the excellent job done by Laurelview and the generosity of all the sponsors, without whose help the Native Challenge wouldn't have happened. He also paid tribute to the sterling work done by the judges and stewards of the various classes, who did a thoroughly professional job.
Whilst congratulations are well deserved by the winners of the various classes,space permits mention only of the overall winners.These were:
Irish Draught-Rockrimmon Rosses Point and Claire McKenna;
Part Bred Irish Draught-Temple Samero and Erin Coulson;
Connemara-Cloonisk Cashel Blue and Claire Brown;
Part Bred Connemara-Da Cappo Two and Elaine Gardiner and
Open Horse/Pony- The General and Emma White.

ANTRIM SHOW (July)

CASTLEWELLAN SHOW (July)

OMAGH SHOW (July)

ARMAGH SHOW (June)

With the broodmare and young stock classes very well supported and the ridden Irish Draught class sporting fifteen entries it was a good day for Irish Draughts and Irish Draught breeders.

Co. Down producer Roy Shield's Rockrimmon Irish Draughts swept the board in the ridden hunter classes with Rockrimmon Glenside Monarch by Castana winning both the heavy weight hunter ridden by Emma Jackson and the Irish Draught ridden class ably ridden by Judith Ryan. In the large Irish Draught ridden class Rockrimmon Roubicous by Gurraun Zidane ridden by Emma Jackson stood second with Robyn Catterall on Ben third and Barry Marsh's Inisharoan Mist by Dunkerrin Grey Mist ridden by Lynne Ireland taking fourth. This class allowed for pure Irish Draughts and part breds with at least one I. D. parent.

It was great to see the pure draughts at the top end of the line. Helen Troughton's lovely mare by Sir Rivie took first in the part breds.

Roy had further success in the working hunter with Rockrimmon Rosses Point by Coolcronan Wood who finished third out of a class of sixty entries.

It can only be hoped that other shows will see the success of the Irish Draught classes at Armagh and consider holding similar classes in the future to help promote the breed as not only an excellent leisure horse but a serious performer and show class winner.
